Rockford Health System Unveils da Vinci Robotic Surgery System

ROCKFORD, Ill. — Men in the Rock River Valley facing a diagnosis of prostate cancer now have a new weapon in their fight against the disease; the da Vinci Surgical System.

Urologists at Rockford Memorial Hospital began performing robotic prostatectomies in September with the da Vinci Surgical System, the most advanced technology available in minimally-invasive robotic surgery for prostate cancer. Patients previously had to go to Chicago or Madison to access medical centers with da Vinci technology.

The da Vinci Surgical System is powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology that allows the surgeon's hand movements to be translated into precise movements of small instruments within the operating area. Da Vinci allows prostate cancer surgeries to be performed through very small incisions, resulting in:

  • Less post-operative pain and discomfort;
  • Less scarring and faster recovery;
  • Lesser chance of impotence and incontinence;
  • Minimized blood loss;
  • Reduced risk of infection;
  • Shorter hospital stay; and
  • The three-dimensional precision and accuracy of traditional surgery.
