Silver Cross MedWorks Offers Travel Medicine Services

Holly Cammack was planning a trip to Africa and having a difficult time finding a place to get the immunizations she needed.  “My physician’s office was helping me find somewhere to get me my shots, and [after a lot of searching] I saw the Silver Cross sign on Essington and made an appointment.”

Holly received her vaccinations at the Silver Cross MedWorks Occupational Health Center located at 1051 Essington Road, Joliet.
On her recent 16-day trip to Africa, Cammack hiked Mount Kilimanjaro and went on a safari.  “We were at the highest point in Africa,” she said, “it was awesome.”

Cammack has always been a traveler, making her way out to Canada and Puerto Rico many times on business-related travel.

“I’ve probably had about eight shots, and my experience with MedWorks couldn’t have been better,” she says.

MedWorks Occupational Health is certified by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to dispense yellow fever vaccine and is listed on the CDC’s website as a travel medicine clinic.  With two convenient locations—1051 Essington Road in Joliet and 250 E. Maple Road in New Lenox, MedWorks offers travelers not only the required and recommended immunizations, but also, consultation with a healthcare provider.

The consultation with travelers is essential for two reasons.  Most importantly, before dispensing any immunizations or medications, Silver Cross staff gathers a brief medical health history to ensure that there is no risk to their health and they can safely receive the vaccination.  Also, as part of the consultation, the staff determines the immunizations required based on the patient’s destination.

“The MedWorks travel medicine program provides patients with everything they need to travel safely.  Each patient leaves our facility with all the appropriate immunizations as well as travel kit information,” says Margaret Oesterreicher, program director at  MedWorks.  “Travelers can enjoy their trip without worry.”

Travel medicine services are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walk-in travelers welcome.  Major credit cards and cash payment only. For more information, call (815) 744-0808.
